Recently, I was assigned to care for a middle aged man, with multiple medical problems coming from minor procedure. This person had explain some details regarding a cardiac arrest. He had had many years ago, obviously which he had survived because he was speaking to me and described how he still doesn't understand why he is alive after that experience. He didn't recall much from the event. Suffice it to say he was told they took out a very, very large blood clot from his heart, which was the cause of the cardiac arrest, resulting in an open-heart surgery, an extraction of the clot to save his life. I can't say more details to protect the patient's privacy. When inducing his anesthesia, I was holding his hand and his mask with my other hand while the nurse anesthetist injected the medications into the intravenous as the IV was closest to her. Right before he went to sleep, he asked me, what did the tattoo on his arm read. It was in another language which I happened to understand, and I read it back to him. I surmised, that the meaning referred to a child of his. He explained that he and his child no longer speak. He seemed very sad. I whispered to him to think of a nice dream as he goes off to sleep to which he replied, "I only have nightmares". I put my hand on his forehead. I told him I would be praying for him and asked him to please imagine himself camping or fishing with this child, and bonding with him. Something in his face began to soften... That was something they loved to do, he shared with me. He took a final, deep breath from awareness, gently closed his eyes, as the anesthetic took effect.
What he didn't know is that I perform Reiki on my patients, which is simply a gentle form of energy healing, an ancient Japanese technique, much like a prayer, but a non-denominational type. It's silent, and it comes from Higher Consciousness and I ask the patient's Soul or Consciousness permission to do so. Rest assured it's not something that would go against their deepest held beliefs. I believe that it helps to keep my patients safe and certainly can't harm them. I suppose I won't really know how effective it is until I die... But what I do know is there is a wellspring of scientific evidence, especially these days, coming out of multiple major university centers showing very strong evidence that there is a positive correlation with energy healing, intent, meditation, and prayer, with how patients recover in many types of illnesses and injuries. I will share an interesting title recently published by Dr. Shamini Jain PhD from Standford, called the "Healing Ourselves; Biofield Science and the Future of Health". See the link below and in links to scientific articles section. He smiled just a little bit right as he drifted off to sleep. I don't know why or how I know, and I don't know if I'll ever get the answer validated but somehow, I know in my heart, he and his adult child will reconcile soon. This may not be scientific evidence for you, but if you follow this link and start asking the questions, you will start receiving answers and information that will become scientifically valid for you... And beyond..... science can only go so far and sometimes our intuition, that is, our deep, deep knowing, is way more validating than any science can ever "prove".
With that end, be well my friends and tell your loved ones that you love them. Never go to sleep angry..... forgive, love deeply, have gratitude, and know that you are loved.
